This is because they defied Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies Allah, then Allah is truly severe in punishment.

ذلك -الذي أصاب اليهود في الدنيا وما ينتظرهم في الآخرة- لأنهم خالفوا أمر الله وأمر رسوله أشدَّ المخالفة، وحاربوهما وسعَوا في معصيتهما، ومن يخالف الله ورسوله فإن الله شديد العقاب له.
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
