Sourate Ibrahim

Ayahs:

52

Lieu de la révélation:

La Mecque

Themes and purpose:

This Makkan surah affirms the truth of the Quran's divine origin, proving Allah’s absolute Oneness and the reality of the Resurrection. It strongly warns the deniers by citing the destruction of past nations (like the people of Nƫង and ÊżÄ€d) and uses the prayer of Prophet Abraham as a central argument to challenge the polytheists of Makkah.

Context of Revelation:

Era: Makkan according to the majority view. Some have said that a few ayahs (from 28 to 29/30]) are Madinan as they were revealed concerning the polytheists at Badr. Ibn ÊżÄ€shĆ«r maintains that while these verses could be understood as an allusion to the coming Battle of Badr, it does not necessitate a later date of revelation.

Chronology: It has been counted as the 70th surah in the well-known chronology of Jābir ibn Zayd, revealed after SĆ«rat al-ShĆ«rā and before al-Anbiyā’.

Name and Ayah Count:

Name: The surah’s only known name is "SĆ«rat IbrāhÄ«m". It is named for the Prophet Abraham, whose prayer for Makkah is contained within it, and to distinguish it from the other Alif-Lām-Rā’ surahs (like YĆ«nus and HĆ«d).

Ayah Count: 52 (KĆ«fah), 54 (MadÄ«nah), 50 (Shām), or 51 (BaáčŁrah).

Surah Overview:

  • Affirming the Quran’s inimitability and divine origin and its purpose to bring mankind from darkness into light. [1-4]
  • Consoling the Prophet (ï·ș) by showing that being a human messenger is consistent with the pattern of past prophets (like Moses) who faced rejection, with reminders to be grateful for Allah’s favours. [5-8]
  • Warning through the pattern of denial and the fate of prior nations (Nƫង, ÊżÄ€d, and those after). [9–15]
  • Establishing Allah’s oneness and power (including replacement/creation arguments). [19–20]
  • Depicting the Day of Judgment: followers and leaders dispute; Satan disowns them. [21–22]
  • The parable of the goodly word vs. the evil word (Islam vs. polytheism). [24–27]
  • Astonishment at the Meccan ringleaders who replaced Allah’s blessing with disbelief and led their people to ruin. [28–30]
  • Enumerating Allah’s blessings as a call to worship and gratitude. [32–34]
  • Highlighting the story of Abraham’s prayer for Makkah to define who truly follows his monotheistic path, an implied condemnation of his polytheist descendants from the Quraysh. [35-41]
  • Concluding universal aim: “This is a message for mankind
 ” [52]
